How Integrative Medicine Compares to Your Huisarts
Many expats in Amsterdam are used to a different healthcare model than the Dutch system, where a GP known as "huisarts" acts as the required gatekeeper to specialists and typically has short (on average 10-minute per medical topic) consultation slots. For every medical topic a new consult or appointment needs to be scheduled. Integrative Health Clinic works differently, and alongside your "huisarts" rather than as a replacement for it.
No referral needed. You can book directly with Integrative Health Clinic without a huisarts referral, which is required for most specialist care within the Dutch system.
Longer, in-depth consultations. An initial intake takes around 90 minutes, significantly more time than a standard huisarts appointment, allowing for a full review of symptoms, history, and lifestyle factors.
Root-cause investigation. Where a huisarts consultation often focuses on managing or ruling out acute symptoms, an integrative intake uses additional diagnostic methods (EPD, TCM assessment, orthomolecular evaluation) to look at underlying imbalances.
Complementary, not competing. Integrative Health Clinic does not replace your huisarts for emergencies, prescriptions, or referrals into the Dutch specialist system — many patients use both in parallel, particularly for chronic or unexplained complaints that haven't resolved through regular care alone.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE VS YOUR DUTCH GP "HUISARTS"
Integrative medicine or functional medicine, and related complementary treatments fall outside the mandatory Dutch basic insurance package "basisverzekering" and are only reimbursed through supplementary insurance "aanvullende verzekering", if at all.
Check your policy type. Reimbursement depends entirely on your specific insurer and the level of supplementary coverage you've chosen. Not all supplementary "aanvullende verzekering" packages include alternative or complementary medicine.
Look for "alternatieve geneeswijzen" or "complementaire zorg." These are the terms Dutch insurers typically use for this category of coverage; searching your policy documents for these phrases will confirm whether mesology or integrative consultations qualify.
Practitioner registration matters. Reimbursement is often tied to whether the practitioner is registered with a recognized professional association. Integrative Health Clinic is registered with an AGB code. This AGG code may be required by your insurer for a reimbursement claim.
Confirm before booking. Because coverage varies so widely between insurers (and expats often hold different policies than long-term Dutch residents), we recommend contacting your insurer directly before your appointment to confirm what portion, if any, will be reimbursed.

1. Intake Consult (€180)
Your first visit is a full intake combining conventional medical history-taking with holistic diagnostics such as Electro Physiological Diagnostics (EPD), TCM assessment, and orthomolecular evaluation. This session maps your complete health profile — not just your current symptoms, but underlying patterns across your body's systems.
2. Your Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your intake results, you'll receive a tailored plan that may combine nutritional supplementation, homeopathic remedies, TCM-based recommendations, and lifestyle guidance — built around your specific findings rather than a standardized protocol.
3. Follow-Up Consult (€150)
Progress is reviewed and measured against your original intake results, and your treatment plan is adjusted based on actual outcomes rather than guesswork. Most patients return for follow-ups to track how their body responds over time.
FIRST VISIT
Depending on the complexity of your complaint, particularly for chronic conditions or persistent physical complaints (PPC), treatment may continue across several follow-ups as your plan is refined. Consultations are conducted fully in English or Spanish, so no Dutch is required at any stage of the process.
